Lando Norris wins Dutch Grand Prix after lap 54 overtake on Kimi Antonelli

Norris passes Antonelli to take Zandvoort win

Lando Norris secured his second consecutive Formula 1 victory by winning the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, finishing more than 10 seconds ahead of Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli. The McLaren driver started from pole position after setting a qualifying time of 1:11.163 on Saturday, edging out George Russell by a tenth of a second. Norris lost the lead to Antonelli following a restart, but maintained close contact with the 19-year-old championship leader through the middle stint. On lap 54, Norris executed an overtake around the outside of Turn 1 on hard compound tires to retake first place and build a commanding gap.

On the last lap I made a mistake at turn 1, I lost a couple of tenths, and it is a pity because we had a real chance to take pole.

Mercedes podium order and midfield positions

Behind Norris, Mercedes executed a team order in the closing stages of the Grand Prix. Russell was instructed over team radio to yield second place to Antonelli to bolster his teammate's championship points tally. Russell retained third position across the finish line despite two overtaking attempts by Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton at Turn 1. Charles Leclerc finished fifth in the second Ferrari, while Oscar Piastri placed sixth for McLaren and Liam Lawson took seventh for Red Bull. Nico Hülkenberg finished eighth for Audi, securing points for the second consecutive race after avoiding a first-lap incident with teammate Gabriel Bortoleto.

First-lap crash and safety car interventions

Home favorite Max Verstappen retired on the opening lap before the battle at the front developed. Starting from seventh position, the Red Bull driver lost control in the banked corner and hit the barrier at full speed, escaping without injury. The race was later interrupted by two Virtual Safety Car periods. The first occurred when Esteban Ocon stopped his Haas on track, triggering pit stops for the leaders. A second caution followed with two laps remaining after Williams teammates Carlos Sainz and Franco Colapinto collided, scattering debris across the track and earning Sainz a 10-second penalty from race stewards.

Sprint race results and title standings

The Grand Prix followed a competitive Saturday programme that included a 24-lap Sprint race. Russell won the Sprint from pole position, finishing over a second ahead of Leclerc, who had overtaken Norris for second place. Rain arrived less than a minute after the Sprint concluded, slowing the field in the final moments.

If there had been one more lap, the race could have had a very different finish, I am glad the rain came at the right time.

Following the weekend in the Netherlands, Antonelli maintained his lead in the World Drivers' Championship heading into the Italian Grand Prix on 6 September. Russell and Hamilton sit tied for second in the standings, both 59 points behind Antonelli. Norris reduced his deficit to 83 points behind the championship leader.
