Airspace incursion near Braniewo

A Russian military Mi-8 helicopter entered Polish airspace on Wednesday, 23 September 2026, prompting Warsaw to scramble fighter jets and place ground defense units on standby. According to the Polish Army Operational Command (DORSZ), the helicopter crossed the border from the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad at 11:08 local time (09:08 GMT). The aircraft penetrated to a maximum depth of approximately 300 metres (328 yards) north of the town of Braniewo, located about 100 kilometres from the port city of Gdańsk. Military radar systems monitored the flight throughout its 42-second duration before the helicopter turned back into Russian territory. The operational command stated that the incident indicated an effort by Moscow to test the readiness of Polish air defense systems.

Baltic intercepts and border alerts

The airspace breach followed several military encounters in the Baltic region earlier the same day. Polish fighter aircraft intercepted a Russian Il-20 electronic intelligence plane flying without an active transponder over international waters, roughly 40 kilometres off the Polish coast. Polish authorities reported that similar intercepts of Il-20 aircraft have taken place repeatedly in recent months off coastal locations such as Łeba, Ustka, and Koszalin. Hours before the helicopter incursion, Polish and allied aviation declared an alert due to a wave of Russian strikes across Ukraine, which temporarily forced civilian aviation authorities to halt flights at Lublin and Rzeszów airports in eastern Poland. Polish prosecutors also revealed that a Russian Gerbera 2 drone recovered from the Baltic Sea the previous week carried a high-explosive fragmentation warhead.

Warnings over hybrid tactics

The border incident follows warnings from Polish and European officials regarding cross-border provocations. On 17 September 2026, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk addressed the national parliament, stating that intelligence indicated Russian preparations for hybrid drone and missile strikes designed to resemble accidents. Following that address and a subsequent visit to Kyiv, Tusk warned of escalating pressure against countries supporting Ukraine.

“In recent weeks, the Russian hybrid threat against Europeans... has intensified. The intent is to intimidate us and break our effort to support Ukraine. The result will be the exact opposite. We are not intimidated because we know that our security today and tomorrow is at stake in Ukraine.”

European intelligence chiefs issued similar assessments during the same week. Michal Koudelka, head of the Czech Security Information Service, stated to The Guardian that Russia might test NATO within months through drone incursions, limited border breaches, or hybrid actions to test allied cohesion.

Allied responses and diplomatic stance

Allied leaders called for measured vigilance across the alliance following the incursion. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that member states must maintain composure while making the necessary investments to defend every centimetre of allied territory. French President Emmanuel Macron announced domestic measures to secure critical infrastructure and defense sites following hybrid operations in Europe. Other incidents reported across the region include an August drone incident at Germany's Leipzig/Halle Airport, Russian flares fired at a Danish military helicopter in early September, and a 13 September drone strike on a passenger train locomotive at the Yahodyn crossing, two kilometres from the Polish border. Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that Moscow does not intend to attack NATO countries, while Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that any European strike on Russia would trigger a very short conflict. The Russian embassy in Warsaw did not respond to requests for comment.
