Clashing positions on coalition leadership

Italian opposition leaders engaged in a series of exchanges regarding the leadership and program of the center-left alliance known as the campo largo. Speaking before the national directorate of the Democratic Party (PD) in Rome, party secretary Elly Schlein stated that programmatic discussions must reflect party weight, noting that the PD achieved double the votes of other opposition forces in European, regional, and municipal elections. Schlein argued that in standard European democratic practice, the largest party leads the coalition, while adding that the PD would participate in open primaries if allies do not accept that principle. Movement 5 Stars (M5S) president Giuseppe Conte, addressing an audience at a book presentation in Frosinone, agreed that open primaries now represent the only remaining path for selecting a joint prime ministerial candidate. PD organization chief Igor Taruffi indicated in an interview with La Repubblica that the coalition intends to hold these primary elections in early 2027.

Schlein defended the party's electoral standing during her address to the directorate:

“In any other European country this discussion would not have taken place because it is normal for the party that gets one more vote to lead: this is not hegemony, it is democracy.”

Disputes over foreign policy and platform compromises

Disagreements between the two main opposition forces extend to programmatic priorities, particularly defense and foreign policy. Conte warned that the M5S will not accept a diluted coalition platform shaped by external or corporate pressures, reiterating his remarks in a video shared across social channels. The M5S leader stated that platform points voted on by party members would remain non-negotiable at any joint drafting table. Conte pointed to public opposition against military escalation, estimating that between 60% and 70% of citizens oppose increased armament spending, while Schlein reaffirmed the PD's commitment to supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression.

Conte clarified his stance regarding programmatic negotiations:

“If we cannot change Italy and a diluted, watered-down project comes out because compromises begin between individual political forces, then I will not lend myself to this.”

Coalition boundaries and the German contract proposal

The perimeter of the alliance remains a contentious topic, specifically regarding the inclusion of Matteo Renzi and Italia Viva. Conte stated in Frosinone that Schlein must serve as political guarantor if Renzi is included in the coalition. Speaking at the Leopolda convention in Florence on Saturday morning, Renzi rejected personal guarantee demands, citing Clint Eastwood by stating that anyone wanting a guarantee should buy a toaster. Renzi instead proposed a German-style coalition agreement, consisting of a binding, written contract defining mutual commitments and policy boundaries.

Schlein also traded remarks with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, calling on the government to step down after four years in office and citing rising poverty, high energy costs, and strain on public healthcare. Meloni responded on social media, criticizing Schlein's response times and accusing the PD secretary of presenting false claims about government performance.
