Reassurances to foreign creditors and investors

AUR party leader George Simion delivered assurances to international lenders on 7 October 2026, pledging that any future government led by his party will fulfill Romania's external financial commitments. The message followed statements by President Nicușor Dan, who warned that including AUR in the executive would harm ties with foreign partners and argued that financial markets oppose snap parliamentary elections. Simion countered that AUR representatives held discussions with foreign investor delegates over recent months, reporting that none expressed reservations about the party taking power. He rejected comparisons to past sovereign debt crises, arguing that fiscal discipline and honoring debt repayments remain priorities for his formation.

“Nobody wants a new Greece. We will do everything necessary to respect our commitments to our international partners and for them to recover their debts.”

Disagreements over snap elections and presidential powers

Simion stated in an interview that a functioning administration cannot be established without early legislative elections, accusing President Dan of orchestrating a blockade against the democratic process to keep AUR from governing. Dan has consistently refused to grant AUR a role in government, arguing that an election campaign would stall required budgetary reforms and health system financing. Simion characterized the president as stubborn and predicted that Dan could resist holding snap polls even if all parliamentary parties support them. If that occurs, Simion stated that opposition factions will gather the required signatures and votes in Parliament to initiate suspension proceedings or pursue the removal of the president from office.

Defense of the interim executive status

Appearing on TVR 1 on 6 October 2026, Simion defended the parliamentary maneuver that brought down the cabinet of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan earlier in the year. Parliament dismissed Bolojan on 5 May 2026 when 281 lawmakers voted in favor of a no-confidence motion submitted jointly by the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and AUR, cutting short a coalition that had planned to govern until April 2027. Since that vote, Bolojan has directed the government in an interim capacity restricted to routine administrative duties, without the power to pass emergency ordinances or government decisions. Simion welcomed this restriction, asserting that the removal of full cabinet authority prevented the adoption of European Union recovery plan (PNRR) measures concerning decarbonization policies and public sector wage legislation.

“Rather than having Ilie Bolojan as a full prime minister, it is better without any prime minister, at least they will not be able to make reckless spending.”

Rejection of rival cabinets and governing projections

Simion affirmed that AUR will not endorse any cabinet from which it is excluded, noting the party's refusal to provide parliamentary backing for an alternative government proposed by Adrian Veștea. He described receiving coercive messages from an unnamed television owner who demanded votes for a new government under threat of political destruction. Simion dismissed attempts to broker external compromises, maintaining that the country requires a four-year government backed by a stable parliamentary majority to implement economic recovery measures. Pointing to party polling strength, he asserted that AUR is approaching a position where it could govern independently, regardless of whether that transition takes two months, five months, or two years.
