Return to the Facebook story

Aaron Sorkin directed and wrote the screenplay for The Social Reckoning, which opened in movie theaters on 7 October 2026. The production follows the events surrounding the 2021 leak of internal Meta documents known as the Facebook Files. Sorkin previously wrote the screenplay for David Fincher's 2010 film The Social Network, which depicted the founding of the platform at Harvard University. In the new release, Jeremy Strong portrays Mark Zuckerberg as an aloof executive who calls himself a free speech absolutist. Mikey Madison stars as whistleblower Frances Haugen, while Jeremy Allen White plays Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz. Sorkin explained the changing scale of the company when discussing the film:

“In 2010 Facebook had 500 million members. Today, however, it has 2.9 billion. It has become something radically different. Over two thirds of Americans get their information through Facebook. The problem is that much of what it spreads is simply false. Facebook is pouring out mass disinformation, things that outrage you and make you angry, so that you keep resharing them.”

Anatomy of the Facebook Files

The script follows the reporting process behind the 17 articles published by The Wall Street Journal in 2021. Sorkin structures the narrative across three distinct years, moving between 2019, 2020, and 2021. In 2019, Horwitz begins investigating Facebook despite lacking technology expertise, working with two interns under San Francisco bureau chief Christina, played by Betty Gilpin. The reporter searches for an insider within Facebook's Civic Integrity division, an internal monitoring unit that the company later disbanded. Frances Haugen, a data engineer with a master's degree from Harvard, agrees to talk after watching algorithms radicalize a friend. During their initial meeting, Haugen warns the journalist that she intends to help the company rather than destroy it.

Algorithmic decisions and platform fallout

The leaked documents detail how platform changes made in 2018 to increase engagement spread hate, misinformation, and political polarization. Internal research revealed that Facebook executives understood Instagram was damaging the mental health of teenagers. The storyline moves toward the 6 January 2021 attack on the United States Capitol, showing Zuckerberg delaying action before suspending Donald Trump. Meta later paid Trump $25 million to settle lawsuits over the account suspension, while YouTube paid $24 million. Across its platforms, which include Instagram and WhatsApp, Meta now records 3.35 billion daily users.

Tech executives on screen

The arrival of The Social Reckoning coincides with two other screen projects focused on tech executives. Documentarian Alex Gibney directed Musk, a four-hour examination of SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk that screened at the Venice Film Festival before its screening at the BFI London Film Festival. Director Luca Guadagnino created Artificial, a dramatization of OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman starring Andrew Garfield, which debuted at the New York Film Festival. Both projects screened at the BFI London Film Festival following the commercial release of Sorkin's film. All three tech leaders, Zuckerberg, Musk, and Altman, recently aligned with President Donald Trump to protect company interests as Hollywood turned to their stories for source material.
