AEMET forecasts Atlantic front bringing temperature drops across interior Spain on 27 August

Inland temperature drop and rainfall patterns

An incoming Atlantic air mass will bring a widespread decline in maximum temperatures across mainland Spain on Thursday, 27 August 2026. The cooling will affect large areas of the central interior, the northern plateau, and the river basins of the northwest quadrant. Minimum temperatures will also decrease across most of the peninsula, with exceptions in the Guadalquivir valley, Catalonia, and the archipelagos where overnight values will remain steady or rise. Rainfall is forecast to expand during the day across Asturias, western Castilla y León, Extremadura, and the Cantabrian mountains. Precipitation will ease as cloud cover moves toward the eastern half of the country and the Pyrenees, where daytime evolution will generate locally heavy afternoon showers.

In the northern city of Vitoria-Gasteiz, cloud cover will build with rain beginning after 06:00, bringing up to 0.1 litres per square metre around 12:00 alongside a slight chance of thunderstorms, before skies clear in the evening. High temperatures in Vitoria-Gasteiz will reach 28 degrees Celsius, with lows near 15 degrees. In Extremadura, cloudy intervals will yield light precipitation and potential showers in the northern half, keeping temperatures between 15 and 24 degrees in Cáceres and between 16 and 28 degrees in Badajoz, with strong wind gusts in the far north.

Mediterranean heat and coastal conditions

Mediterranean coastal and pre-coastal areas will bypass the general temperature decline on 27 August. Highs will exceed 35 degrees in sections of the Ebro valley, the Valencian pre-coastal area, southeastern Spain, and the island of Mallorca. The Balearic Islands will experience tropical nights where overnight temperatures stay above 20 degrees, accompanied by dispersed haze and mud-bearing precipitation.

In the province of Alicante, Elche will reach a daytime maximum of 35 degrees around 18:00 with a minimum of 21 degrees, accompanied by light south breezes and light rain during the second half of the day. Benidorm will see daytime highs reach 30 degrees, a maximum thermal sensation of 31 degrees, minimums near 23 degrees, and light afternoon showers under southwest breezes. Further north in Castellón de la Plana, clear skies will allow thermometers to climb to 35 degrees at 15:00, with minimum values near 21 degrees and light southwest winds.

Mountain winds and regional outlook

Wind will be a prominent weather factor throughout the peninsula on Thursday. Moderate winds will prevail across most regions, but strong intervals and very strong gusts will hit elevated peaks in the northern half of the country. High-altitude areas in the Sierra de Guadarrama, the Iberian System, the Cantabrian range, and the Pyrenees will register particularly intense gusts.

In Navarra, light variable winds will become moderate southerlies during the morning before shifting west in the afternoon, with very strong gusts forecast on Pyrenean crests and light rain possible in the north and western ranges. In La Rioja, temperatures will range from 17 to 28 degrees in Haro, 18 to 31 degrees in Logroño, and 18 to 32 degrees in Calahorra, with southwest winds and potential afternoon showers in the mountains. In the Canary Islands, the tail of a weather front will generate cloudy skies and moderate rainfall across northern sections of mountainous islands, alongside lower maximum temperatures and moderate north-to-northeast winds.
