Spain under yellow alerts for heat and storms on Monday as temperatures climb to 40°C in the south
Ten autonomous communities are under yellow alerts for high temperatures, rain, and storms on 29 June, with the Guadalquivir valley expected to hit 40°C and hail forecast in eastern areas.
Warnings across the country
Spain's meteorological agency Aemet has activated yellow alerts for Monday 29 June in ten autonomous communities, covering high temperatures, heavy rain, and thunderstorms. The heat warnings are concentrated in Andalusia, the Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Extremadura, the Community of Madrid, and the Canary Islands. Maximum temperatures are forecast to reach 39°C in parts of Huelva, Seville, Córdoba, and Jaén, and up to 38°C in Ciudad Real, Badajoz, and Cáceres. The heat alerts will be in force from 13:00 to 21:00 local time.
Storms and hail in the east
Alongside the heat, Aemet warns of locally strong showers and thunderstorms in the eastern half of the peninsula. Yellow alerts for rain and storms cover Almería, Granada, and Jaén in Andalusia, as well as Aragón, Murcia, and the Valencian Community. The storms may bring hail and very strong wind gusts, with accumulated rainfall of up to 20 litres per square metre in some areas.
The storms may be accompanied by hail and very strong wind gusts.
On Sunday 28 June, the agency had already issued orange warnings (significant danger) for storms in Navarre, La Rioja, Aragón, and Soria, where rainfall exceeded 30 litres per square metre in one hour in some locations.
Southern heat and tropical nights
The Guadalquivir valley is expected to see temperatures reaching 40°C again on Monday. Nighttime temperatures will remain above 20°C in much of Andalusia, Madrid, and the Mediterranean coast, continuing a pattern of tropical nights. In the Canary Islands, temperatures will rise notably, with the interior south and west of Gran Canaria surpassing 34°C, accompanied by calima at altitude and trade winds gusting over 80 km/h on southeastern and northwestern slopes.
