Sweden secures victory in Solna

Sweden defeated Romania 2-1 on Friday evening at Strawberry Arena in Solna during the opening round of UEFA Nations League Group B4. Alexander Isak opened the scoring for the home side in the 20th minute before Dennis Man leveled the match for Romania in the 29th minute. Viktor Gyokeres restored the Scandinavian lead in the 43rd minute, establishing a 2-1 scoreline that remained intact through the interval and the entirety of the second half. Sweden dominated ball possession and frequently pushed into the attacking third, while Romania created clear scoring opportunities during the first half but suffered from defensive errors and lower efficiency after the break.

Tactical assessment from Gheorghe Hagi

Romania head coach Gheorghe Hagi reviewed the match on Antena 1, acknowledging that Sweden controlled the tempo and forced Romania to chase the ball. Hagi admitted to a tactical mistake regarding the team's reliance on long balls, noting that Swedish defenders won aerial contests while Romania performed best when keeping passes on the ground. He characterized Sweden as a World Cup caliber team led by a coach who has established a clear identity across ten matches. Hagi also commented on midfielder Ianis Hagi, stating that he fought hard alongside his teammates, while emphasizing that the entire squad must develop greater courage and ball control rather than only playing vertical passes.

“It was a nice match, both teams wanted to play. They had more control, they had the ball longer, we ran after the ball more, we tried. I cannot overlook the good things the boys did, they gave everything they could. In the first half we had very clear chances. Overall, it is a defeat, it does not suit us, but that is how it is, because they also played well.”

Player reactions and defensive challenges

Romanian goalkeeper Ionuț Radu offered his perspective following the match, stating that the squad demonstrated competitiveness despite the defeat. Radu noted that Sweden fielded experienced players of high individual quality, yet defended his teammates' collective effort across the ninety minutes. When asked whether he could have prevented the strikes from Isak and Gyokeres, the goalkeeper expressed uncertainty while affirming that the team gave an overall solid performance. Hagi separately instructed his players to keep their heads held high, urging them to analyze their shortcomings and focus on upcoming fixtures in the campaign.

“I think more could have been done. We played against a team with great experience, with very valuable players, but we showed that we are very competitive and I think the team played a very good match.”
