Greek-owned tanker Olympic Life hit by external explosion off Oman; crew safe but fuel spills into Arabian Sea
The Greek-owned VLCC Olympic Life reported an external explosion on its port side near the waterline while sailing 60 nautical miles east of Muscat, Oman, on Monday. The crew is safe but a quantity of marine fuel leaked into the sea.
The incident
A Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) named Olympic Life, sailing under the Marshall Islands flag, reported an external explosion on its port side near the waterline on Monday, 26 May 2026. The vessel was approximately 60 nautical miles east of Muscat, the capital of Oman, at the time of the incident. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) issued a warning confirming the explosion and stated that the ship and its crew are safe, though a quantity of the vessel's fuel spilled into the sea.
According to an initial assessment, there is damage to one of the vessel's fuel tanks. An iridescent oil film was reported in the waters after the incident.
The cause of the explosion remains unknown. The ship's master reported the incident, and relevant authorities are closely monitoring the situation. The UKMTO has advised vessels transiting the area to exercise increased caution and report any suspicious activity.
The vessel and its journey
The Olympic Life is a Greek-owned VLCC managed by Springfield Shipping and owned by Olympic Shipping & Management, an Athens-based company. Olympic Shipping & Management is the successor to Olympic Management, the company founded by the late shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, according to Reuters citing the Onassis Foundation website.
At the time of the explosion, the tanker was sailing without cargo, having loaded oil from Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates. It was heading toward the exit of the Gulf of Oman, continuing its voyage toward India. Despite the damage, the vessel remains stable and operational, and it continued its journey normally after the incident.
Environmental and safety concerns
The explosion caused a fuel leak from one of the vessel's tanks, resulting in an iridescent oil sheen on the water. Springfield Shipping stated that the leak has since been contained. No injuries were reported among the crew members, and there was no immediate danger to their health.
The vessel and its crew are safe, although the tanker reported that some of its fuel leaked into the sea.
Regional context
The incident adds to a series of security events recorded recently in the broader Arabian Sea and Strait of Hormuz region, heightening concerns within the international maritime community. The explosion comes during a period of heightened geopolitical tension in the Middle East and reinforces worries about the safety of commercial vessels in one of the world's most critical energy corridors.
