Chinese President Xi Jinping concluded a three-day state visit to Washington on Friday following bilateral talks, cultural tours, and formal White House events. US President Donald Trump welcomed Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, at Joint Base Andrews before hosting a formal state dinner on Thursday evening. The dinner guest list included corporate executives such as Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang, Apple chairman Tim Cook, SpaceX founder Elon Musk, and LVMH chairman Bernard Arnault. Guests dined on sea bass while Trump presented Xi with a bald eagle statue and showed him construction on the White House ballroom and helipad. The discussions between the two leaders covered artificial intelligence, trade policy, and global security. Over tea at the White House, Trump called the bilateral talks tremendous, stating that both nations had made great strides, while Xi commented that the discussions added new substance to US-China relations. According to US Ambassador to China David Purdue, Trump delivered a direct warning regarding Chinese cooperation with Tehran.

“We already made clear weeks ago that any form of aid to Iran, direct or indirect, would be absolutely unacceptable. The president reiterated this with extreme clarity.”

China's Foreign Ministry reported that Xi asked Trump to oppose Taiwanese independence and exercise caution on the issue, whereas Trump previously indicated that US weapons sales to Taiwan could be negotiated. On technology, Trump posted on Truth Social that both leaders agreed the term Super Intelligence should replace Artificial Intelligence.

Chinese state media gave extensive coverage to the visit, with the People's Daily allocating its complete front page and six photographs to the bilateral meetings. On the Chinese search engine Baidu, the top three trending topics on Friday were the bilateral talks, the state dinner, and Xi's greetings for the Mid-Autumn Festival. However, foreign policy analysts noted that the summit concluded without joint policy declarations regarding Chinese satellite imagery supplied to Iran, nuclear arsenal expansion, or territorial actions in the South China Sea. Julian Gewirtz, a former National Security Council director for China, reviewed the summit's emphasis on personal diplomacy.

“Trump has increasingly collapsed the vast challenge of U.S.-China relations into the narrow question of his personal relationship with Xi. He seems either unaware of or unconcerned by Beijing's effort to turn today's stabilization into tomorrow's constraints on U.S. policy.”

Visual controversies and upcoming summits

Digital forensics specialists noted alterations in an official image posted by Trump on Truth Social following the arrival ceremony. Matthew Stamm, a data forensics researcher at Drexel University, told AFP that an image of Trump saluting next to Xi during a fighter jet flyover contained traces of generative artificial intelligence. Authentic video footage from Joint Base Andrews in 18-degree Celsius weather captured Trump wincing at jet engine noise while wearing a striped tie and two black gloves, whereas the published image showed a neutral expression, a solid blue tie, one glove, and inconsistent background footwear. Both leaders confirmed plans to meet again at the APEC summit in Shenzhen in November 2026 and at the G20 summit in Miami in December 2026.
