Disruptions at Freeman Coliseum

President Donald Trump spoke on Wednesday evening at the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio to rally voters behind Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton. Demonstrators interrupted the address multiple times from scattered locations across the auditorium, leading security personnel and police officers to intervene. Estimates of the number of protesters removed from the arena ranged from at least six to around 20, according to venue security and police reports cited by news outlets. Several individuals were placed in handcuffs, and one protester was pushed and physically assaulted by an attendee while attempting to exit the venue. Another demonstrator drew notice in the crowd by wearing a Spanish national football team jersey. Attendees wearing cowboy hats attempted to drown out the interruptions by booing and chanting patriotic slogans throughout the arena.

Onstage reactions and accusations

Trump initially attempted to speak over the interruptions before stepping back from the lectern when a demonstrator approached the stage. After security escorted that protester away, the president mocked the demonstrator by referencing his family.

“He's going back home to mom. But what he doesn't know is his mom voted for Trump.”

As interruptions continued, Trump directed personal remarks at other demonstrators, telling the audience that one man needed to lose a substantial amount of weight and describing the hecklers as bad-looking people. Trump also asserted without evidence that the demonstrators were funded by hostile entities and enemies of the nation. Frustrated by the repeated stoppages, he called directly on any remaining political opponents in the arena to leave immediately.

“If there are any more paid protesters, please raise your hand and get the hell out of here.”

Republican friction and candidate dynamics

While the rally was organized to build support for Paxton, Trump devoted substantial parts of his speech to federal deportation efforts, criticism of transgender individuals, and claims connecting Democratic governance to elevated crime rates. He commended Paxton as a fantastic man and described him as perhaps the greatest attorney general in the country. Trump had backed Paxton during the Republican primary over incumbent Senator John Cornyn, but recent friction between the two men preceded the San Antonio event. Trump referred to Paxton the previous week as a person who could sometimes be a nuisance, alongside prior remarks critical of Paxton's attire. A leaked audio recording published on Wednesday by Axios revealed Paxton expressing criticism of Trump, increasing gasoline prices, and the ongoing war with Iran.

Tightening race for the Senate seat

The event marked Trump's third campaign visit to Texas in less than a month, reflecting Republican efforts to defend a seat in a state Trump won by almost 14 percentage points in 2024. Republican officials have allocated more than $300 million to Texas races ahead of the 3 November vote, driven by competitive polling. Recent surveys conducted by The New York Times and Reuters placed Democratic candidate James Talarico ahead in the race. If elected, Talarico would become the first Democratic senator to represent Texas since 1988. Trump warned attendees that his supporters would never forgive them if Democrats took the seat, before attacking the Democratic nominee directly.

“With your support, 27 days from now, we're going to crush 'dumocrat' communist James 'Tala-freak-o'.”
