Verstappen leads qualifying at Sepang

Max Verstappen recorded a lap time of 1 minute 35.130 seconds to take pole position for the Bahrain Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit. The result marked the Red Bull driver's first pole position of the 2026 season and the 49th pole of his Formula One career. Verstappen benefited from an aerodynamic update package introduced by Red Bull at the previous round to lead all three qualifying segments. In Q3, the four-time world champion led team-mate Isack Hadjar by three tenths of a second on his initial run before improving his time by another tenth on his final lap. Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton qualified second, finishing 0.298 seconds behind Verstappen to complete the front row.

Verstappen commented on the performance following the session.

“We had gotten closer and finally we got it. When you start first, the goal has to be to win.”

Penalties and midfield qualifying order

Hadjar set the third fastest time in qualifying for Red Bull but received a five-place grid penalty for fitting a seventh internal combustion engine of the season. That penalty drops the French driver to eighth on the grid and promotes championship leader Kimi Antonelli to third. Antonelli suffered a setback in Q2 when race stewards deleted his lap time for exceeding track limits, forcing him to complete a recovery lap to reach the top-ten shootout. Charles Leclerc will start fourth for Ferrari alongside Antonelli, with McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri securing fifth and sixth positions.

Mercedes driver George Russell, who enters the weekend 66 points behind Antonelli in the championship standings, qualified eighth after committing a driving error on his fastest attempt. In the midfield, Pierre Gasly placed ninth for Alpine, Gabriel Bortoleto took tenth for Audi, and Liam Lawson was eleventh for Racing Bulls. Fernando Alonso qualified 12th to earn Aston Martin their highest starting position of the year, followed by Williams driver Carlos Sainz in 13th and Lance Stroll in 14th.

Geopolitical relocation from Sakhir to Sepang

The race serves as the sixteenth round of the 2026 Formula One championship, relocated approximately 6,000 kilometres from its original venue in Sakhir. Organisers originally scheduled the Bahrain Grand Prix for 12 April 2026 as the fourth round of the season, but regional conflict and a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz halted maritime shipments of technical equipment to the Persian Gulf. While the 2026 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix was cancelled entirely, Bahrain promoters negotiated an agreement to shift the event to Sepang while retaining the Bahrain Grand Prix name.

Under the financial arrangement, Bahrain promoters cover the majority of hosting fees, while Malaysian officials manage on-track operations. The Sepang circuit fit into the logistical schedule because the championship recently raced in Baku and had planned travel to nearby Singapore. The event marks Formula One's first return to Malaysia since 2017, when Verstappen won the race.

Practice sessions and tyre management

Antonelli led Saturday morning's final practice session with a lap of 1 minute 36.302 seconds on soft tyres, recovering after placing eighth in Friday's second practice. The final practice session was briefly halted by a red flag to clear debris that became lodged in the front-right tyre of Haas driver Oliver Bearman. Reigning champion Norris ended third practice in seventh place as the only driver in the top ten running on medium tyres, followed by Piastri, Franco Colapinto of Alpine, and Arvid Lindblad of Racing Bulls. Hamilton placed sixth in the session while testing tyre durability in the Malaysian heat.

Hamilton assessed the car's balance during team radio communications.

“It felt like a pretty decent lap considering the tyres were not great.”

Drivers face challenging track conditions for Sunday's race, with high track temperatures, tyre degradation, and intermittent rain posing tactical variables across the field.
