Patriarch of Tuscan winemaking

Italian winemaker Vittorio Frescobaldi died in Florence on 26 August 2026 at the age of 97. Frescobaldi represented the 31st generation of a noble Florentine family whose agricultural and viticultural operations span more than 700 years, dating back to the Middle Ages. Over centuries, the estate supplied wine to the Medici family, the English royal court, and Catholic popes. Vittorio Frescobaldi managed the enterprise across several decades before transferring executive leadership to his son, Lamberto Frescobaldi. He is survived by his wife, Bona, and their four children: Fiammetta, Angelica, Lamberto, and Diana.

Postwar leadership and company expansion

Born in Florence on 30 November 1928, Frescobaldi earned his degree in agricultural science from the University of Florence in 1953. Following his graduation, he joined the family business and assumed executive leadership alongside his brothers, Ferdinando Frescobaldi and Leonardo Frescobaldi. Under their stewardship, the company introduced managerial practices into cellar operations while expanding vineyard holdings across several Tuscan territories. The estate cultivated grape varieties and regional appellations ranging from Chianti and Pomino Vin Santo to Brunello di Montalcino and Pinot Nero. In 1977, the Italian state awarded Vittorio Frescobaldi the title of Cavaliere del Lavoro, honouring him as a dedicated agriculturalist whose company produced renowned wines distributed across Italy and abroad.

International markets and partnerships

During the second half of the 20th century, Frescobaldi guided the family firm through a structural transition in the Italian wine economy, which moved from domestic table wine consumption to export-oriented quality production. To expand the estate's global reach, he initiated an international joint venture in 1995 with American wine producer Robert Mondavi. That partnership led to the creation and development of prominent Italian wine labels, including Tenuta Luce in Montalcino and Ornellaia in Bolgheri. Frescobaldi was also an active participant in the Vinitaly wine fair from its first edition, supporting the event's expansion into a primary commercial hub for Italian producers.

Industry and government tributes

Agricultural institutions and government officials issued tributes following the announcement of his death in Florence. Italian Minister of Agriculture Francesco Lollobrigida sent condolences to Lamberto Frescobaldi and the family, commending the elder vintner's role in international viticulture.

“With the passing of Vittorio Frescobaldi, Italy loses a figure who helped raise the profile of our agriculture and winemaking art in the world. He knew how to combine tradition with a vision for the future without ever forgetting his deep bond with his land. This was the recipe that allowed him to become a point of reference for the entire sector.”

Veronafiere President Federico Bricolo also issued a statement on behalf of the Vinitaly exhibition organisation.

“With the passing of Vittorio Frescobaldi we lose an absolute protagonist of Italian wine and a gentleman, a figure who knew how to enhance the family's centuries-old tradition in the sector, reading changes with farsighted anticipation, giving renewed international impetus to his company and to the whole sector.”

The Unione Italiana Vini stated that Frescobaldi steered the evolution of Tuscan oenology by opening regional producers to international commercial channels.
