Vollering claims world road race title in Montreal

Dutch cyclist Demi Vollering won the women elite road race at the UCI Road World Championships in Montreal on Saturday, capturing the rainbow jersey for the first time in her career. The 29-year-old rider, competing on a challenging circuit around Mont-Royal, added the world title to a season that already included victories at the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France. Vollering outsprinted Poland's Kasia Niewiadoma on the final uphill stretch, while Italy's Elisa Longo Borghini crossed the line in third place to complete the podium. The victory followed multiple podium near-misses in previous world championships, where Vollering took silver in 2023, seventh in 2024, and fifth in 2025.

Mid-race pileup reshapes the field

The 180.4-kilometer race featured nine laps over a 13-kilometer circuit, anchored by the Camillien-Houde climb. An early breakaway formed when Norway's Marte Berg Edseth and Natalie Quinn of the United States escaped, building a lead of 3 minutes and 15 seconds alongside Beatriz Roxo of Portugal and Gergana Stoyanova of Bulgaria. The dynamic of the race changed abruptly with roughly 95 kilometers remaining, when a crash involving around 15 riders tore through the peloton. Among those brought down was Spanish contender Paula Blasi, who had previously crashed at the 110-kilometer mark and was already weakened by an overnight viral infection. Blasi withdrew from the race at the team pits with elbow wounds, while Swedish rider Caroline Andersson and Australian Lauretta Hanson were transported to the hospital after receiving on-course medical treatment. Defending champion Magdeleine Vallieres of Canada, French rider Evita Muzic, and Dutch rider Femke de Vries were also caught in the pileup.

Solo attack and the chase on Mont-Royal

Following the crash, the Dutch team increased the tempo to establish control over the peloton. After a counter-attack by France's Maeva Squiban with 52.6 kilometers remaining, Vollering launched a solo attack with 38.5 kilometers to go on the Camillien-Houde ascent. She quickly carved out an advantage of between 20 and 30 seconds over a splintering chase group. A four-rider pursuit group consisting of Niewiadoma, Longo Borghini, Switzerland's Marlen Reusser, and France's Juliette Berthet organized behind her. Reusser set a demanding pace on the lower slopes before dropping back, allowing Longo Borghini and Niewiadoma to bridge the gap to Vollering with 15.2 kilometers left. Berthet rejoined the leading trio just before the penultimate pass through the finish area.

Sprint finish on Avenue du Parc

With 13 kilometers remaining in the final lap, Longo Borghini launched an attack, opening a 10-second gap over her rivals. Vollering and Niewiadoma worked together on the subsequent climb to close down the Italian attacker. On the steep Avenue Pagnuelo ramp, Niewiadoma accelerated, dropping Longo Borghini and leaving two riders in contention for the world title. Entering the final straight on Avenue du Parc, which features a 4% uphill gradient, Niewiadoma yielded the lead position to Vollering. Vollering controlled the pace into the finishing meters and launched her sprint to cross the line first, securing the rainbow jersey ahead of Niewiadoma and Longo Borghini.
