On 23 July, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero appeared on TVE's 'Mañaneros 360' for his first public interview since being indicted in May for alleged influence peddling and money laundering tied to the 2021 rescue of airline Plus Ultra. He denied any role in the €53 million bailout, rejected claims he set up an offshore company, and dismissed the idea that his daughters Laura and Alba acted as frontmen.

“The last thing I would have done is try to make my daughters frontmen for something. Come on, please.”

The former prime minister insisted on his presumption of innocence and criticized leaks of his private agendas. But critics noted he added nothing beyond what he told the judge on 17 June.

The jewelry mystery

The most damaging element remains the cache of over 100 pieces of jewelry seized from his office safe, valued at €1.3 million by Madrid jeweler Ansorena. Zapatero called them a "courtesy gift from many years ago," stored without any "patrimonial intent." He refused to name the donor or the date, saying he would first explain to the judge.

“Now they cause me a deep allergy. Imagine what this issue has meant for me, I who have never set foot in a jewelry store.”

Pressed on whether Saudi Arabia was the source, he declined to answer. He also denied any intention to defraud tax authorities, claiming the jewels were kept with family items.

Judicial pressure mounts

Judge José Luis Calama has been waiting 37 days for the explanation Zapatero promised within "a week or ten days" after his 17 June court appearance. Anticorruption prosecutor Elena Lorente, frustrated by the delay, filed a request days before the interview asking for an expanded report from Ansorena. She wants a more precise market valuation (suspecting the figure could be higher) and an analysis of when the stones were mounted to estimate the date of the gift.

The prosecutor's move signals that the investigation is advancing regardless of Zapatero's media strategy.

Political reactions

Vicente Vallés, anchor of Antena 3 Noticias 2, called the interview "strange" because an accused person should first present evidence to a judge, and a public figure should appear only when they have something new to say.

“Zapatero let himself be interviewed, strictly speaking, to say nothing he hasn't already said. To declare himself innocent and deny all accusations. But he made no contribution that makes his words more credible; he just denies everything, nothing more.”

Socialist party colleagues were reportedly disappointed, though the government maintains its support. The editorial board of EL PAÍS described the explanations as "late and insufficient," while acknowledging his right to a fair process.

What comes next

Zapatero must now deliver the detailed account he promised to Judge Calama. The Ansorena report could either corroborate his "courtesy gift" narrative or deepen the suspicion of hidden assets. With confessions from other figures in the alleged influence network already weakening his defense, the former prime minister's legal position remains precarious.
