First-round victory in Beijing

Alexander Zverev opened his campaign at the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing on Thursday with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 victory over Britain's Cameron Norrie. The 29-year-old top seed navigated a tight opening set, saving a break point at 1-2 and a set point at 5-6 before controlling the tiebreak 7-1. In the second set, Zverev missed an initial break opportunity at 3-2 but secured the decisive break on Norrie's serve at 5-4, concluding the contest in one hour and 39 minutes. The German arrived in Beijing only two days before the match after travel from Europe. He expressed satisfaction with his performance in his post-match remarks.

“I am really surprised and happy with how I played today. I only arrived from Europe two days ago and there are quite a few time zones in between.”

Extended record against left-handed opponents

The win against the 40th-ranked Norrie maintained Zverev's undefeated head-to-head record against the Briton, extending their series to 9-0 on the main tour. It also reinforced his performance against left-handed competitors across recent seasons. Since the 2023 French Open, Zverev has compiled a 47-1 record against left-handers, with his lone defeat coming against Learner Tien in the second round in Acapulco last year. That stretch also includes his four-set win against world number four Ben Shelton in the US Open final two weeks earlier.

Pursuit of the world number one ranking

Zverev entered the Beijing tournament trailing world number one Jannik Sinner by 1,370 points in the ATP rankings. Sinner withdrew from his title defense in Beijing due to persistent right knee issues, opening an opportunity for Zverev to reduce the deficit. While the 500 ranking points available in Beijing do not allow Zverev to overtake the Italian immediately, Sinner faces significant point defenses in the coming months, including 550 points if he misses the Shanghai Masters beginning on October 7. In a pre-tournament press conference, Zverev discussed his position in the race for the top spot.

“I think that is a goal for everyone. I believe at the start of the season everyone expected this battle to play out between Carlos and Jannik, so I am very pleased that I am now part of this conversation.”

Season trajectory and tournament outlook

Zverev's position at number two represents a shift from early February, when he trailed then-leader Carlos Alcaraz by more than 9,000 points and Sinner by nearly 5,700 points following the Australian Open. Alcaraz subsequently missed several months due to a wrist injury, while Zverev added titles at the French Open and US Open, followed by Davis Cup play against Croatia and the Laver Cup. If Zverev reaches the number one spot, he would become the second German man to do so after Boris Becker, who held the ranking for 12 weeks. In the Beijing round of 16, where compatriot Jan-Lennard Struff has already qualified, Zverev will play either Sebastian Baez of Argentina or Shang Juncheng of China.
