Admiral Cooper praises USS Lincoln crew amid reports of record deployment and mental health concerns

Admiral Brad Cooper, head of U.S. Central Command, visited the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea on Saturday, August 15, during a 10-day tour of the region that also took him to Bahrain, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates to meet civilian and military leaders. He described the crew as "awe-inspiring" and said he witnessed "camaraderie, teamwork and resilience." The carrier, with roughly 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard, left its home port of San Diego in November and arrived in the Middle East in January to support U.S. operations against Iran, including the blockade on Iranian ports.

Cooper said in a statement released Saturday that the Lincoln strike group's deployment would be remembered for its intensity.

History will record this deployment as one of the most operationally intense and consequential of the modern era.

In a statement posted on social media on Sunday, Cooper said the Lincoln had "among the lowest number of cases related to mental health" of the Navy's 11 active aircraft carriers. He praised the carrier's leadership for making mental health and crew resilience a priority. In an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal on Sunday, Cooper wrote that "issues related to food, hot water and other concerns" were raised "months ago" and addressed by leadership, adding that "many elements of those stories are old news."

Reported conditions and crew concerns

Democratic lawmakers have pressed military leaders on reports of shortages of basic supplies, water contamination, plumbing issues, sewage problems, and deteriorating morale aboard the carrier. The Military Times reported last week that at least two sailors have attempted to jump overboard, with the wife of one sailor saying burnout caused her husband to try to jump. Family members have expressed concern about mental health deteriorating due to the conditions.

The ship has not made a port call in a record-setting uninterrupted time at sea. Sources differ on the exact duration: Reuters cites Democratic lawmakers saying more than 200 days, while other outlets report more than 240 days, and Al Jazeera gives a figure of more than 250 days. The New York Times describes the deployment as stretching almost nine months. The deployment, originally set to end in May, has been extended more than a month past its planned seven-month schedule.

This doesn't mean that all is perfect. Service at sea for long periods isn't for everyone. It is uniquely challenging and tough, and every single one of us, including me, reacts to stressors in different ways.

Political response

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said earlier this week that reports about conditions on the ship "completely misrepresented" the situation. President Donald Trump on Friday dismissed concerns about the length of the deployment and the crew's mental health, saying "No. No. No." when asked whether he was concerned, and adding that the deployment was "not nearly long enough."

What happens next

U.S. officials have confirmed that the USS Abraham Lincoln will return home soon as part of a planned rotation. The Pacific-based aircraft carrier USS George Washington, currently near Japan, is being redeployed to replace the Lincoln. The Navy acknowledged supply challenges last week but denied a mental health crisis on the ship.
