
Isar Aerospace launches Spectrum rocket into orbit from Norway with six payloads
The German start-up placed five university research satellites and a science experiment into low Earth orbit on Saturday, conducting the first successful orbital launch of a privately developed rocket from continental Europe.
Orbital launch from northern Norway
German aerospace start-up Isar Aerospace reached low Earth orbit on Saturday night, 5 September 2026, launching its two-stage Spectrum rocket from the Andøya Spaceport in northern Norway. The vehicle lifted off at 22:12 local time (shortly after 20:00 GMT) from its launch pad located north of the Arctic Circle under the mission title "Onward and Upward". Spectrum carried six payloads into space, consisting of five miniature research satellites supplied by universities and one dedicated scientific experiment. The rocket traversed maximum aerodynamic pressure before its first stage separated two and a half minutes into the flight. The upper stage, powered by a single engine, passed the 100-kilometre boundary into space after three minutes, and mission control confirmed orbital insertion roughly seven minutes after liftoff. Live telemetry disconnected after approximately ten minutes as the vehicle moved beyond direct ground range.

Redesign following earlier test failure
The mission succeeded on the company's second attempt following an initial flight in March 2025, when a Spectrum prototype crashed into the sea and exploded 30 seconds after liftoff from Andøya. Following that failure, engineers overhauled the rocket's architecture, removing several tens of thousands of components to simplify the design and enhance reliability. The company experienced several delays between January and September 2026 due to technical checks and weather conditions, including a scrubbed launch attempt in April 2026 caused by a suspected leak in a composite overwrapped pressure vessel. Isar Aerospace chief executive Daniel Metzler praised the outcome following the orbital insertion.

Production scale and commercial backlog
The 28-metre Spectrum launcher relies on ten engines across its two stages to deliver payloads of up to 1,000 kilograms into low Earth orbit. Isar Aerospace manufactures the non-reusable rocket at its production facility in Ottobrunn near Munich, which the company states can produce more than 30 launch vehicles annually. The start-up holds launch bookings with the European Space Agency, Japanese space firm Astroscale, and Munich satellite operator OroraTech, which deploys constellations for orbital wildfire detection. Germany's armed forces, the Bundeswehr, have also indicated interest in contracting domestic microlauncher builders, including Rocket Factory Augsburg and HyImpulse, to deploy hundreds of communications satellites into orbit in coming years.
Political reaction and European space strategy
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz welcomed the orbital insertion from the European continent, while the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space in Berlin declared that Germany had established orbital launch capability.
