Minneapolis apartment shooting leaves three dead and three police officers injured

Emergency response at Shoreline Plaza

Emergency dispatchers in Minneapolis received the first 911 calls reporting gunfire at an apartment complex in the Loring Park neighbourhood at 4:36 p.m. on Wednesday. Officers arrived at the Shoreline Plaza building, located half a block from the Minneapolis Convention Center, within three minutes. Upon entering, officers immediately located victims and heard continuous gunfire coming from an upper floor. As officers moved up the stairwells to locate the shooter, they encountered a dense haze that severely limited visibility. The gunman opened fire on the advancing officers, striking two of them before retreating.

Casualty count and officer hospitalisations

The confrontation resulted in three deaths, including the gunman, and multiple hospitalisations across downtown medical facilities. One civilian victim died at the scene, while a second died after emergency transport to Hennepin County Medical Center. The suspect was later found dead inside the building, though authorities have not yet confirmed whether he was shot by police or died by suicide. Two Minneapolis police officers sustained multiple gunshot wounds, with one officer shot twice in the abdomen and another shot twice in the leg. Both officers underwent treatment, including emergency surgery for the abdominal wound, and remain in stable condition alongside three wounded civilians.

A third officer suffered non-gunfire injuries during the interior confrontation, while four additional officers experienced adverse reactions from the airborne haze. Two responding officers also sustained injuries when their squad car crashed en route to the scene.

Suspect background and eviction proceedings

City and law enforcement officials stated that the suspect was actively facing eviction proceedings, which investigators are reviewing as a potential motive. Residents in the building reported repeated confrontations with the individual in the days leading up to the shooting. Resident Julius Bailey recounted hearing screams and counting eight gunshots before fleeing the building entrance. Another resident, Chris Miller, stated that he had encountered the man carrying a handgun in the hallway earlier in the week and reported the incident to building management.

Interim Police Chief Bill Peterson addressed the department's history with the individual and the danger faced by responding units.

It's truly sickening that in my career, 31 years here, that is the third incident like this that has happened. But our officers have shown that they are willing and they do respond towards gunfire when others are running from it, and it's absolutely heroic.

Investigation and official reactions

Dozens of law enforcement personnel secured the scene on Thursday, led by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension alongside federal agents from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Mayor Jacob Frey commended the patrol officers who cleared the complex unit by unit while facing active fire.

But for their heroic work, the death toll would be far higher.

State officials, including Governor Tim Walz and Senator Amy Klobuchar, released public statements supporting the wounded personnel and the affected community. Investigators remain at the Grant Street property to determine the exact composition of the haze and complete ballistics analysis.
