Rosalía, Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem cheer Spain to World Cup last 16 as 'Despechá' rings out at SoFi Stadium
Spain's 3-0 win over Austria at SoFi Stadium secured a last-16 spot, but the real spectacle was in the stands where Rosalía, Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem led the celebrations.
The match
Spain secured a place in the World Cup round of 16 with a dominant 3-0 victory over Austria at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Thursday evening. The match kicked off at 9 p.m. local time and saw La Roja control the game from the outset, with goals celebrated by a crowd that included some of Spain's most famous exports. One Spanish outlet, however, reported the final score as 2-1, though the majority of sources confirmed the 3-0 result. The victory confirmed Spain's passage to the knockout stage, continuing a strong tournament run that has fans dreaming of the title.
Celebrity turnout
The stands at the 70,000-seat venue doubled as a red carpet, with Penélope Cruz (52) and Javier Bardem (57) among the first to be spotted by stadium cameras. The Oscar-winning couple waved and smiled each time they appeared on the giant screens, drawing loud ovations. Cruz wore a red Spain jersey knotted at the waist, while Bardem kept a lower profile in a brown T-shirt and cap. After the final whistle, Cruz posted a selfie with Rosalía on Instagram, writing:
Vamoooooos España!!!! Felicidades!!!
Rosalía's viral moment
Rosalía (33), fresh from a concert at the Kia Forum as part of her Lux Tour, arrived just in time for kick-off. The Catalan singer became the night's unexpected star when the stadium PA played her hit "Despechá" after each Spanish goal. Initially surprised, she put a hand to her chest and gasped, then rose to dance and wave her scarf alongside Cruz and Bardem. By the third goal, she was fully immersed, singing along and waving her scarf in time with the music. During halftime, she signed autographs for fans near her VIP section.
Fashion notes
Rosalía's outfit drew almost as much attention as her dancing. She wore a vintage white Spain jersey with a round red collar and embroidered crest, a design from the archive that is no longer available in stores. She paired it with black capri pants, low-heeled stilettos, and a red Spain scarf worn over her head like a hood, a look that one outlet likened to a football-supporting Virgin Mary. Cruz, meanwhile, opted for the official red jersey, skinny jeans, a black cap, and a white Chanel bag.
Other famous faces
The VIP section also included footballer Alexia Putellas, former players Carles Puyol, Fernando Hierro, David Villa and Míchel Salgado with his wife Malula Sanz, as well as Stella del Carmen Banderas, daughter of Antonio Banderas, and her husband Alex Gruszynski. International guests Timothée Chalamet and director Ridley Scott were also present. Spanish TV host Alfonso Arús later remarked that the trio's celebration showed they were genuine fans. Antonio Banderas, watching from Málaga, shared a photo of his daughter at the stadium, writing:
Mi hija en Los Ángeles y yo en Málaga, en contacto continuo y disfrutando del juego de la selección española.
