South Africa beats New Zealand 33-26 in Cape Town to level four-test series

First-half dominance at the set piece

South Africa responded to their opening defeat in Johannesburg by claiming a 33-26 victory over New Zealand at Cape Town Stadium, levelling the four-match series at 1-1. The Springboks established control early, scoring just 102 seconds into the match when centre Jesse Kriel crossed after a 15-metre lineout maul. New Zealand answered through scrumhalf Cam Roigard following a break by Will Jordan, but South Africa maintained scoreboard pressure through two lineout-based tries. Damian de Allende added the second try in the 22nd minute, and captain Siya Kolisi forced his way over shortly before the interval following a five-metre scrum. Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus introduced prop Ox Nche and hooker Malcolm Marx in the 36th minute, replacing Gerhard Steenekamp and Deon Fourie to secure a 24-14 half-time advantage. Lock Eben Etzebeth repeatedly disrupted the All Blacks at the lineout, spoiling three attacking throws and securing one steal.

Kolbe kicking and late New Zealand fightback

Winger Cheslin Kolbe delivered a decisive kicking display, kicking three conversions and four penalties for an 18-point haul that earned him player-of-the-match honours. Kolbe extended his perfect record in the series to 11 successful kicks from 11 attempts at goal, allowing South Africa to build a 30-14 lead heading into the final quarter. Despite conceding points to penalties, New Zealand scored four tries to South Africa's three, utilizing backline pace through Damian McKenzie, Leroy Carter and Ardie Savea. Savea powered across the line in the 77th minute to reduce the margin to seven points in front of 56,589 spectators. The All Blacks mounted a final attack in the closing minutes, but Springbok replacement loose forward Cameron Hanekom secured a defensive breakdown turnover to end the match. The result handed All Blacks head coach Dave Rennie his first defeat of the year after four previous test victories and four tour wins against South African franchises.

Coaching dispute over scrum legality

Tensions surfaced after the final whistle as the rival coaches clashed over officiating and scrum stability. Rennie raised concerns about the Springboks shifting sideways during the engagement, noting that Australian referee Angus Gardner had to intervene to maintain positioning.

If the Springboks moved across further left, then he stopped them. So we will give a bit of feedback around that. It's still a bit of an issue them walking around.

Erasmus rejected the criticism during his post-match press conference, pointing out that several New Zealand scrums collapsed on the tourists' own feed while defending his team's technical discipline.

The first six scrums for New Zealand, every single one collapsed, and it was just reset, reset, reset, reset. So why is it only on their ball that the scrum collapses?

Erasmus also stated that his side had refrained from complaining about unpenalized head contacts in the opening 40 minutes, while explaining that his decision to start Fourie and Steenekamp was dictated by forecasts of wet weather.

Series outlook

The four-test series now moves to Johannesburg for the third match on Saturday, 5 September. The tour marks the first test series between the two nations in 30 years, designed to commemorate New Zealand's 1996 tour. The final fixture of the series is scheduled to take place on 12 September in Baltimore in the United States.
